On September 24, Beijing time, Li Zhenming withdrew from the 120th U.S. Open after losing his temper in six pushes. Now, he apologized for his "bad behavior" in Wing Feet.
The 30-year-old New Zealand player seems to have a solid result in the third round, but on the 18th hole, he missed a 4-foot par putt on the par four green, and then he started his collapse. After a series of non-serious putts, he pushed the ball into the hole on his sixth putt, resulting in a five bogey (9 strokes) and a 78. He then angrily slammed the putter into the bag next to the green, and soon announced his retirement due to a wrist injury.
Li Zhenming finally took out Twitter a few days later to apologize for his behavior and promised to have "better sportsmanship in the future."
"I apologize for the bad behavior at the U.S. Open last week. It's not professionally ethical and stupid," Li Zhenming wrote. "The frustration dazzled my head. Plus what I have to deal with all week. Injury. But that's still an excuse. I shouldn't have left like that."
Li Zhenming was one of the last players to enter the lineup. He won the wing foot seat for ranking 45th in the FedEx Cup standings. In 2008, he won the American Amateur Championship at the age of 18. His only PGA Tour victory was the 2015 Greenbrier Classic.
